There’s nothing sadder than a sick pup. Unfortunately, that’s just what we’ve had on our hands this weekend. Not sick exactly, but my poor, sweet Lani had to have surgery on both of her hind knees last Thursday. She had a condition (very common in small dogs) called MPL, or “trick knee,” where her kneecaps pop in and out sporadically causing her bouts of pain, which can eventually lead to arthritis and other scary ailments. The condition is degenerative and (sadly) the only fix is surgery.
Wednesday night, we took her to the park to run free one last time before a tough few weeks of rest and recovery. I snapped some pics to remember her just like that – content and care free – since I think it’s going to be a while before we get to see that side of her again.
It’s been a rough few days so far, but she’s making progress. Since she can’t walk on her back legs just yet, she’s actually figured out how to walk on her front legs, which is just as comical as it sounds. 🙂 She’s eating regularly, and seems to have grown accustomed to me squirting water in her mouth through her medicine syringe (for some reason she doesn’t want to get it from her bowl), and I even noticed an ears back, bright-eyed look of joy when I got back from running a few quick errands yesterday – even though she still can’t meet me at the door.
I can’t wait for her to be her old self again. It’s so strange how different the mood of the whole house is when she’s not feeling well. But I’m hoping that every day she’ll get better and better, because I need many more years of her sweetness in my life.
